OPCIONES / OPTIONS

---------------------------------------
Some time ago I watched a documentary about filmmakers who talked about their first movies. Denzel Washington, as he shot "Antwone Fisher", said what he worried the most was just to be sure that every shot fit with the next one.
That doubt is out of me some time ago -actually I'm pretty sure Denzel hadn't at all- but what I do think that's the starting point and getting what you exactly want is the goal. That's something I've tried in every shortfilm made until now but sometimes a shadow, a dialogue, the frame... something always pushed me from that goal and I never could get what I wanted when I design the whole project.
I already have a rough cut of the first act of the movie and I'm glad because every single scene in this 18 minutes -we'll put it down to less than 15- gives me options which means I'll be able to get what I expected thank to the whole crew and cast who have made it possible.

I'm looking forward to finish this rough cut in order to get the style I want for the movie.

REESCRIBIENDO / REWRITING

At last we arrive to the moment when we become lines in the script into the film I hope it will be.

LA TEDIOSA ESPERA / A TOO LONG WAIT

----------------------------------------------
That kind of waiting which is related with transcoding a whole movie from the cards to the files which are the ones you finally work with.
I see shot after shot, take after take, and I can't start with the editing -which I want to do the most- because I have to wait: transcode 21 days of footage takes 72 hours.

The good point is I can watch all that tv-shows that I missed because of the shooting, like "Games of Thrones" or "The Following".

A MIS COMPAÑEROS DE VIAJE / TO MY JOURNEY MATES

Gracias.

Dani Zarandieta.
--------------------------------------------
Thank you.
The biggest truth about the crew and cast of any production is that we all become in something different than we started... in every way.

You work with people who don't know you at all and they become in those ones you miss when they don't have to come to the set.

You find yourself sharing every day with someone you love and at the end of the day that feeling is not enough to give him/her back what they've done for you.

People you barely know say things like this to you: "you put all your energies on make your film and let me handle that problem".

You see how people who usually is the one who you spend your time laughing become in those who fix any situation.

You lean on someone who is essential for you and you learn that word is not enough to explain how you feel about her/him.

A friend of you, someone who has shared other journeys with you, is now the one who you would do bungee jumping for, even when you suffer vertigo.

You find understanding where you didn't expected.

People say to you: "I'm here to work, that's why you called me", and he/she has a back pain that is barely able to sit on a step.

You hear people saying that they like that way of working but it's you who admire them because they have made this story as yours.

You feel overwhelmed for ac actress/actor and her/his devotion to her/his role.

They say they're sorry for being late on set the lights but you are flipping out with that ability to build something with such a lack of equipment.

You need to share hugs to whom you just meet.

You see smiles when it's freezing out there.

You receive trust when you're surrounded by doubts.

A journey starts as a journey but it becomes in something different, sometimes better, sometimes worse, but always different.
I have to say that "NYC" has been the most important journey of my entire life: not because of is the first feature film or because of the story I wanted and needed to tell but because the only way of making it real is because of you all and that indescribable commitment you made.
You all made this project came true and because of you all, this has been the most important journey of all my life.

That's why I can't call you journey mates anymore, now you all are MY FAMILY, and I'm the one who used to say three things to family:
1) Whatever and whenever you need anything, here I am.
2) TONES OF THANKS
3) See you in a bit.

I love you all.
Dani Zarandieta.

ÚLTIMO DÍA DE RODAJE / LAST DAY OF PRODUCTION

G R A C I A S
----------------------------------------------
We've got a movie.
I got this picture of myself -as we we're working on preproduction- taking a look at the schedule and trying to estimate which scenes we'd lose and which ones we couldn't at any cost cause if we did it, we'd lose the movie.
Well, the last April 23rd at 4:30pm, Jessica yell "That's A wrap", which it meant the shooting came to an end and while I was embracing Carmen I thought "we've got a movie".
Because we didn't lose anything.
We got some scenes that won't be in the final cut, some were shot to be saved, some are even better than I thought as I wrote them and some I can't wait for editing them.
A last day of production is meant to be enjoyed. And the truth is the most of the days of this project were like that. But the last one was really close of not being one of these.
We didn't have any kind of trouble and day on a public place but the last two scenes. The thing was we had the scene 89 -I can't tell where it takes place- which we started to shoot when a nice security guy came to us and invite us to leave. Quickly Jesscia and I thought about where to shoot it so we decided to do it where the next one -scene 90, last scene in NYC, the end of the movie- would take place so we didn't had where to do this one.
We shot the 89 and looked for a place to get the last one -the most important one- and it was 1:30pm. We walked and walked. In those 20 min I had a panic attack in my mind thinking if we'd lose that one we'd lose the movie.

We searched for a place. A last day is meant to be enjoyed, isn't it?
So we did. Well, I did.
We shot in a location that it was even better than the one I had on my mind but we were at 3º though so  the cast couldn't even think. But everyone gave their 2000% -we hug each other to get warm. Jessica run around us between takes-.
And finally we've got a movie... our first feature film... A film by a crew that... No, that is something I'm doing next but in the meantime:

DÍA 12 EN NYC / DAY 12 IN NYC

-----------------------------------------------
A GREAT day before the last day.
Because it's been really good.
And I know that it seems we've been shooting in a warehouse of smiles but I told you last day in Greenpoint was tough so I can also say: today has been a truly good day.
Tappy and Oskita -we've spent the whole morning with them- made us enjoying with their characters -and weather helped us-. Well, we had this funny shot with trucks, bikes, sun, clouds... a nightmare. But the rest of the morning in Washington Square and around was amazing.
And then Andy reached us... and we went to this wonderful location with this speechless view. And they gave us such an amazing scene that I wish I could start with the edit right now.
And tomorrow is the last day. Journey comes to an end. But tomorrow will be tomorrow... and it seems it's gonna be raining...

DÍA 11 EN NYC / DAY 11 IN NYC

Encontrando soluciones.
-------------------------------------------
Finding solutions.
Second day waiting for unexpected turn, this time because of the tight of the schedule.
6 scenes with action, runs and dialogues... and 5 characters. And the funny feeling of seeing your crew looking at you with that face of "does he know what he's doing?" and I was there, with no mental ability to explain that I knew in two languages but we the strong of doing it.
And once again we made it... and I've come back to my neighborhood where I lived for a year.... and yep, that feeling.
Tomorrow is the third nightmare day on the schedule, the day before we wrap and the farewell.

DÍA 10 EN NYC / DAY 10 IN NYC

Pues estaba equivocado.

Amor incondicional.
-------------------------------------------
I was wrong.
The day was smooth like silk without any kind of problem.
Yep, I used to wait for Murphy's visit -and I'm still waiting although my beloved producer hates a bit- and yesterday was the first day of three which I'm scared of.
But like I said, the day was amazing from early in the morning when we arrived to the subway station in outdoors. We had only 4 shots to do -two cameras at the same time- but a 4 pages dialogued scene. And I wanted almost perfect in every take cause my idea was to start the scene with the WS and then cut to M3S so actors needed to be perfect. And THEY NAILED. I spent some time trying to find a solution just in case we couldn't make it but Jess, my beloved and admired Jess, said to me: "we're gonna make it with no doubt".
And she was right.

Truth is this crew gives me the quiet I need most of the times.
And then we arrived at Columbia, with Karola Sanchez's smile on set, and a afraid in the air: they kick us out for sure.

Not even close. Actually they didn't care we're around.
I was an hour looking for a place where to shoot hidden from security guys but I wanted the shot of the main steps -so many movies have been shot there than they are part of the story of cinema-. And once again Carmen and Jess -my guard angels- said to me: "Shoot and shut up".
And they gave me what I wanted and needed.
Unconditional love.

DÍA 09 EN NYC / DAY 09 IN NYC

-------------------------------------------
Laughing till death.
We ended interiors today and we did it with a sequence which makes the whole crew -non spanish included- couldn't stop of laughing because of the situation we're making.
And the day began with this amazing pleasure of working with my brother Pep Muñoz, star of every single project we made in NYC so he had to be in this one for sure.
It's been a day where my beloved Jaime saved my ass doing his best only with some bulbs.
And I love this people more day after day.
And we've fun working... and days pass by.
Tomorrow we are at Columbia University which means I'll probably write some thing like "well, they didn't let us shoot so we had to move to some supermarket or something like that".
Wish us luck if you pleased.

DÍA 08 EN NYC / DAY 08 IN NYC

--------------------------------
A life waiting for this scene.
We started on a hurricane in Transmitter Park, shooting one of those moment I respected the most. And it worked, maybe we need to fix some things in postpo.
We broke for lunch and rest: and it rained all it had to.

So we went to Bryant Park, the place which impressed me the most first time I came NYC in 2003.
When I rewrote this story I knew one the most important scene would take place in this park. And at last I was lucky enough to shoot where I always dreamed.
And I was even luckier than that thank to these actors who nailed from the first take to the last one, with an amazing crew who gave me wonderful generosity in a unforgettable place for this movie.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
